Free screening and North Texas premiere of:
“We Knew What We Had: The Greatest Jazz Story Never Told,”

  • What:

    A music documentary about the rich yet unrecognized jazz scene in Pittsburgh. The film includes interviews, historical photographs and more than 20 performance clips of jazz icons such as George Benson, Stanley Turrentine, Billy Eckstine and Mary Lou Williams. Film producer Marty Ashby will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. A free public reception at the Sammons Center for the Arts follows the Q&A.

  • Why:

    USA Film Festival and the Sammons Center are among the nearly 20 members of the Dallas Jazz Appreciation Month (D’JAM) committee formed in 2012 to stimulate the current jazz scene. The celebration is part of the national celebration started by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2003. Each April, musicians, concert halls, schools, colleges, museums, libraries, jazz presenters and public broadcasters offer special programs that explore, perpetuate and honor jazz as a national and world treasure.
