Lou Harlas is a nationally recognized electric and acoustic bassist. For more than three decades, Lou has performed a versatile repertoire of jazz, rock, rhythm and blues, and classical music throughout the United States. His work is characterized by an affinity for all styles of American music.
In New York, Lou toured with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, featuring Ella Fitzgerald, and performed live with Dave Liebman and Junior Cook. Lou also has performed with Red Rodney, Cedar Walton, Branford Marsalis and Frank Foster.
While a resident of Nashville, Lou performed with David Ball and Johnny Lee, among many other artists. His master and demo recording included work for Polygram Publishing and Asylum Records. Lou also played in studio sessions with Mark O’Connor, Marty Stuart, Vassar Clements, and John and Jamie Hartford.
Currently living in Dallas, Lou keeps an active local and national performance schedule, both live and in the studio. He has taught bass and jazz studies at The University of Texas at Arlington and is currently teaching music in the Dallas County Community College System.
A native of Houston, Texas, Lou is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin (BS). After studying music at North Texas University (now The University of North Texas), Lou earned a master’s degree in jazz performance from the University of Miami. As a student, Lou received the Outstanding Musicianship Award from the National Association of Jazz Educators.
Winds sweeping down the plains of Oklahoma may have led Lynn Seaton, who was born in Tulsa, to study, teach, and perform internationally. From the Sooner State, he would go to Ohio, New York, and other points in the USA, as well as Europe and Japan. During that time, he worked alongside dozens of artists including the Count Basie Orchestra, Herb Ellis, Tony Bennett, and Mel Tormé in the recording studio and at concerts and festivals. Currently, a full professor at UNT, Lynn is a member of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and is the 2008 Sammons Artist of the Year.
Michael Medina moved to DFW in 1978 to study at the University of North Texas. He owns “First Bass Productions,” a recording company that produces 2tone’s CDs among other works. He has done extensive studio work in addition to performing with well-known artists including Luis Conte, Andy Timmons, Ignacio Berroa, and Alex Acuna to name a few. His most recent project is with the Redd Coats which recently released their first CD and appeared on the front cover of the International Journal of the American Federation of Musicians. He teaches Audio Engineering at Collin College and is also with Mesa Boogie on a development team researching how to perfect amplifiers for the bass guitar.
Mike Luzecky grew up in St. Louis where he was first introduced to music via the piano and cello before discovering the bass. A graduate of UNT’s famed jazz program, where he was a member of the UNT Latin Jazz Ensemble, Mike has shared the stage with Josh Groban, Ignacio Berroa, Miles Okazaki, and “Blue” Joe Marini. He is an active performer playing with several DFW/Austin area artists. Lately, you can find him at the Paschall Bar in Denton.
Peggy Honea is one of Dallas’ rare female jazz bassists. A freelance player and member of several different cover bands, she is comfortable on both electric and double bass. She is involved in the theater community playing extensively for theaters throughout the DFW area. With her love of all things music, she too is a leader of her female jazz group “Girls Night Out” and heads up Totally Corporate Entertainment, a booking agency.
A multi-talented musical artist, producer, educator, arranger, composer, radio broadcaster, and author, Roger Boykin began his musical career in 1955, playing guitar in a blues band while still in high school. He has worked in just about every area of music including: blues, jazz, gospel, and rhythm & blues. He started his own record label, Soultex Records, in 1967 and has produced numerous singles and albums. He currently works as an educator and radio DJ. He is a sought after jazz musician and plays multiple instruments including Piano, Saxophone and Guitar. He served as the Artistic Director of the Sammons Jazz series from 1997 to 1999. He has been a driving force behind the jazz music industry in Dallas going back to the Woodman Auditorium and The Recovery Room and was part of the circle of musicians who popularized the “Texas Tenor” style made famous by players such as David “Fathead” Newman and Marchel Ivery.
